We ran into an interesting Japanese phenomena recently. Apparently many people in Japan believe that PET (polyethylene terephthalate - plastic) bottles filled with water keep away cats. From what we've seen it is not uncommon for cars, gardens and homes to be surrounded by said bottles.
There also seems to be some concern that these water filled bottles may in fact 'magnify the suns rays' and cause houses to catch fire. Wow.
